Where appropriate, Mr. Peters will be responsible for providing research and documentation of the history of existing buildings, including surveys and recordation methods, use of archival and published sources, development of historic contexts, on-site investigations, the use of National Register of Historic Places guidance, and direction for completion of contract documents.

Mr. Peters is personally responsible for the firm's work involving historic preservation to ensure that this work meets the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.  His list of projects includes such award-winning designs as the expansion of the Albuquerque International Sunport, the renovation / restoration work at New Mexico Military Institute, Winslow High School, and The East Valley Institute of Technology Mule Barn.

 

Professional Associations

Mr. Peters is a member of the American Institute of Architects and is a former President of both the Rio Salado AIA Chapter and the AIA State of Arizona.  In 1999, Mr. Peters was awarded the AIA Arizona Medal, which is the highest recognition that can be made by the Arizona AIA.  He was the recipient of the City of Mesa's lifetime contribution to Historic Preservation Award in 2001. Mr. Peters is past Chairman of the City of Mesa's Historic Preservation Board. He is a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the Arizona Preservation Society. He is a founding member of the New Mexico Architecture Foundation.

 

Mr. Peters, as a co-author, has developed for the National Park Service a "Guide to the Renovation of Historic and Older Schools" This document was produced to help school districts make the choice to restore, renovate, or build new schools in their districts. It documents the "Historic" process and takes the user through the process of restoration, renovation, and preservation, as defined by the Secretary of Interior Standards. The document was published in cooperation with the Council for Educational Facilities International in the summer of 2003, and received a National Preservation Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2005. He has lectured on historic schools for the NTHP at its national convention in Portland, and was keynote speaker for the Idaho Preservation Foundations symposium for historicBoise schools. 

 

In 2001 Mr. Peters published "The New Mexico Military Institute Development of its Campus Plan and Architecture Style", from 1890-1930.

  

 

 

Historic Preservation: 

Historic preservation projects include the following:

 

n       New Mexico Military Institute, Roswell, New Mexico.  BPLW+ASCG produced a 10 year Master Plan for this 62-acre campus established in 1890, in the collegiate Gothic Style. 13 major buildings erected from 1907 to 1936 on the National Register of Historic Places. Documented the Hagerman Barracks facility constructed in 1898.

n       Bennet Hall Renovation, Menaul School,Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Project was the complete interior renovation of this two story territorial style building, constructed in 1928. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

n       Colorado Telephone & Telegraph Building, Albuquerque, New Mexico BPLW+ASCG completely renovated the exterior and interior of this building for AT&T to use as a public display area for their collection of museum quality telephone equipment. The building was constructed in 1906 and was the home of the first telephone system in New Mexico.

n       Federal Courthouse Renovation, Amarillo,Texas.  BPLW+ASCG designed a new courtroom on the first and second floors of this 1937 building that is on the National Register of Historic Places.

n       Federal Courthouse Renovation, El Paso, Texas.  BPLW+ASCG designed a new courtroom and judges chambers on the first floor of this 1935 building which is on the National Register of Historic Places.

n      Federal Courthouse Renovation, Santa Fe, New Mexico.  BPLW+ASCG has provided numerous projects for this 1870 building, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.  These projects include the replacement of the copper roofing systems; site-work, including landscaping and irrigation systems, and site perimeter stone wall; interior remodeling to create three judges chambers and to refinish all oak wood doors and window frames. 

n       Old Terminal Building Renovation, Albuquerque International Sunport, Albuquerque, New Mexico.  BPLW+ASCG repaired the exterior and re-roofed the building, which is an adobe pueblo style structure constructed in 1938.

n      Winslow High School, Winslow, Arizona.  BPLW+ASCG worked with the Arizona State Historic Preservation Offices to provide historic documentation for this 1929 campus designed by Trost & Trost Architects of El Paso. Evaluated building for adaptive use for the district.

n      Apache County Courthouse, St Johns Arizona. BPLW+ASCG is currently programming and designing a new addition and restoration of this 1917, Trost and Trost building in northernArizona. It will document and provide paperwork for placing this building on the national register.

n     Developed and successfully obtained State of AZ Heritage Fund Grants for the Verado Stagecoach stop, ca 1888. Provided field documentation, drawings and inspections for compliance with the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for restoration.

n     Mesa Historical Museum, Mesa Arizona. Provided historic documentation, applied for and received a State of AZ Heritage fund grant to do restoration work on the main school house built in 1914 and the WPA auditorium built in 1936. Both structures are on the National Register. Wrote RFP for CM services and administered the grant and construction process.

n      Restoration and renovation of Mesa’s Historic Irving school, built in 1936. This 3.5 million dollar restoration project was completed in 2007 for the Mesa Public schools and will house the district-wide arts program and storage. The project is on the National Register of Historic Places.

n      Historic documentation of the Buckhorn Baths in Mesa Arizona. Constructed by Ted and Alice Sliger, this historic building complex was first listed as a local historic landmark and is now on the National register. Built over several years from 1936-50, it was the home of the NY Giants for several years as their spring training retreat. Documentation provided the information to become listed on the National Register.

n      New Mexico State University YMCA/Alumni building. This Trost and Trost building was completed on campus in 1910. A complete $1.5 million dollar restoration of the building and the addition of a stair tower and elevator in 2003 to provide handicapped access.

n     Documentation, renovation and restoration of the 1928 Mule Barn on the East Valley Institute of Technologies campus in Mesa AZ. The old Mule Barn is an excellent example of adaptive use. This old barn is considered to be one of the finest remaining examples of Arizona Barn Architecture in the state. It is now used as the board room for the district after a $2 million dollar renovation in 1999.
